Getting to Mostar from Biograci

The drive from our holiday home in Biograci to Mostar takes approximately 30 minutes via the M6 road through Široki Brijeg. The route is straightforward and scenic, passing through the Herzegovinian countryside. You can also take a slightly longer route via Čitluk, which is equally beautiful.

🚗 Driving tip: Enter "Stari Most, Mostar" in Google Maps before you leave (while you have WiFi). The navigation will guide you straight to the bridge area. There is no toll on this route.

Where to Park in Mostar

Parking near the Old Town can be tricky during peak season. Here are the best options:

  • Parking Lucki Most — Large lot near Lucki Bridge, 5-minute walk to Old Bridge. Around 5 KM (2.50€) per day.
  • Tabhana parking — Closest to the Old Bridge, but fills up quickly in summer. 2 KM/hour.
  • Street parking on Bulevar — Free in some areas, but check signs carefully.
💡 Tip: Arrive before 10:00 AM in summer to find parking easily. Many spots fill up by midday, especially from June to September.

Stari Most — The Old Bridge

The Stari Most is a 16th-century Ottoman bridge that spans the Neretva River. Originally built in 1566 by architect Mimar Hajrudin on the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it stood for 427 years before being destroyed during the Bosnian War in 1993. It was meticulously reconstructed and reopened in 2004, earning UNESCO World Heritage status.

The bridge is 30 meters high and 4 meters wide. Walking across it, you will feel the smooth stone worn by centuries of footsteps beneath your feet. The views of the turquoise Neretva River below are breathtaking.

Bridge Diving

Mostar is famous for its tradition of bridge diving. Every summer, local divers leap from the top of Stari Most into the icy Neretva below — a tradition dating back centuries. The annual Red Bull Cliff Diving competition takes place here, drawing thousands of spectators. You can watch the divers from the riverbank or from one of the restaurants with terrace views.

Top Things to Do in Mostar

1. Walk Through the Old Town (Stari Grad)

The cobblestone streets of the old town are lined with traditional Ottoman houses, mosques, and artisan workshops. Browse through the Kujundziluk bazaar (the old coppersmiths' street) for handmade souvenirs, Turkish coffee sets, and local crafts.

Built in 1617, this mosque offers one of the best views of the Old Bridge from its minaret. The small entrance fee (around 12 KM) is well worth it for the panoramic photo opportunity.

3. Explore the War Photo Exhibition

A sobering and important museum documenting the 1992-1995 Bosnian War and its impact on Mostar. Located in a former bank building near the Old Bridge. Entrance is around 10 KM.

4. Discover Blagaj Tekke (15 min from Mostar)

Just a short drive from Mostar, the Blagaj Tekke is a 16th-century Dervish monastery built into a cliff face at the source of the Buna River. It is one of the most photographed sites in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Boat rides into the cave cost around 5 KM.
