Medjugorje: Complete Visitor Guide
Medjugorje is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Europe and an unmissable destination in Herzegovina. Known for the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary since 1981, it draws millions of visitors each year — both pilgrims and curious travellers. From Ferienhaus Biograci, Medjugorje is just a 20-minute drive away.

Getting to Medjugorje from Biograci
The drive from our holiday home in Biograci to Medjugorje takes approximately 20 minutes via the M6 road through Široki Brijeg and Čitluk. The route passes through the heart of the Herzegovina wine region, with vineyards stretching along both sides of the road. Follow signs to “Međugorje” once you pass through Čitluk.
Where to Park in Medjugorje
Parking in Medjugorje is straightforward and mostly free. There are several large parking areas around St. James Church. The biggest lot is directly behind the church and can accommodate hundreds of cars. During major feast days (June 24–25 and August 5) it fills up early, so arrive before 8:00 AM.
Apparition Hill (Podbrdo)
Apparition Hill (Podbrdo or Brdo ukazanja) is where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary reportedly began on June 24, 1981. Six local children reported seeing and speaking with the Madonna, and the messages have continued through some of the visionaries to this day.
The path to the top is marked with bronze relief stations depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The climb takes about 30–40 minutes and the terrain is rocky, so wear sturdy shoes. At the summit stands a white statue of the Virgin Mary marking the exact spot of the first apparition.
Cross Mountain (Križevac)
Križevac (520 m) is the larger of the two hills in Medjugorje. A concrete cross was erected at the top in 1934 by local parishioners to commemorate 1,900 years since the crucifixion of Jesus. The cross is 8.5 metres tall and contains a relic of the True Cross brought from Rome.
The climb follows the Stations of the Cross and takes about 45–60 minutes. The path is steeper and more challenging than Apparition Hill, with loose rocks and uneven terrain. The panoramic views from the top — overlooking the Neretva valley, vineyards, and the Adriatic mountains — are spectacular and well worth the effort.
St. James Church (Crkva sv. Jakova)
The Parish Church of St. James is the spiritual centre of Medjugorje. Built in 1969 (before the apparitions), it was expanded to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. The church can seat around 5,000 people, with a large outdoor altar area for even bigger gatherings.
Mass Times
Holy Mass is celebrated daily in multiple languages. The main evening programme typically follows this schedule:
- 17:00 — Rosary prayer
- 18:00 — Holy Mass (Croatian, with translations available)
- 19:00 — Blessing of religious objects, prayer for healing
During summer and feast days, additional masses are held in English, Italian, German, and other languages. Check the parish information boards near the church entrance for the current schedule.
Other Things to Do in Medjugorje
1. The Risen Christ Statue
Behind the church, you will find a striking bronze statue of the Risen Christ by Slovenian sculptor Andrej Ajdič. Remarkably, the right knee of the statue has been seeping a clear liquid since its installation — a phenomenon that has never been explained.
2. The Blue Cross Area
At the base of Apparition Hill, a blue cross marks a popular prayer spot. This is where one of the visionaries reportedly still receives daily apparitions. Many pilgrims gather here in the late afternoon for prayer and reflection.
3. Community of Cenacolo
About 2 km from the church, the Cenacolo community is a rehabilitation centre founded by an Italian nun. Visitors can attend their testimonies and witness the community garden. Their stone sculptures and artwork are impressive.
4. Wine Tasting in Čitluk
Just 10 minutes from Medjugorje, the town of Čitluk is the centre of Herzegovina’s wine country. The local Žilavka (white) and Blatina (red) wines are excellent. Visit Čitluk Winery or one of the family cellars for a tasting.
