Kravica Waterfalls: Complete Visitor Guide

6 min readBy Zdravko Sakic

Kravica Waterfalls are one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Herzegovina and a perfect summer excursion. This stunning 25-metre cascade on the Trebižat river creates a natural amphitheatre surrounded by lush vegetation — often compared to a “mini Niagara.” From Ferienhaus Biograci, the waterfalls are just a 40-minute drive away.

Getting to Kravica from Biograci

The drive from Biograci to Kravica Waterfalls takes about 40 minutes via Čitluk and Ljubuški. Head south through Široki Brijeg towards Čitluk, then follow signs to Ljubuški and Kravice. The route passes through beautiful Herzegovina countryside with vineyards and fig orchards.

🚗 Driving tip: Enter “Kravica Waterfall” or “Vodopad Kravica” in Google Maps. The road is well-signposted from Ljubuški. There is a large parking area right at the entrance.

Swimming at Kravica

Swimming is the main attraction during summer. The natural pool at the base of the waterfalls is refreshingly cool (around 15–18°C even on the hottest days). The water is crystal clear and the rocky pool has areas ranging from shallow to several metres deep.

There are no official lifeguards, so swim at your own risk. The rocks around the pool can be slippery, so be careful when walking near the water’s edge. There is a flat rocky area perfect for sunbathing, and the grassy banks offer shade under the trees.

⚠ Safety: Do not jump from the rocks into the water — the depth varies and hidden rocks can cause injuries. Swim in the designated areas only. Keep children supervised at all times.

What to Bring

  • Swimsuit and towel — Essential in summer
  • Water shoes — The rocks are slippery; water shoes are strongly recommended
  • Sunscreen and hat — Limited shade near the water
  • Drinking water and snacks — There is a small restaurant/bar at the site, but bringing your own is practical
  • Waterproof phone case — The spray from the waterfalls reaches far
  • Picnic blanket — Nice grassy areas for relaxing

Best Time to Visit

The waterfalls are most spectacular in late spring (April–May) when the water flow is at its peak after the winter rains. The cascade is at its widest and most powerful during this period.

For swimming, the best months are June through September when temperatures regularly exceed 35°C. July and August are the busiest months — arrive early (before 10 AM) to find a good spot.

In autumn and winter, the waterfalls are quieter and equally beautiful, though swimming is not possible. The reduced water flow in late summer (August–September) can make the falls less dramatic.

Facilities on Site

  • Restaurant/bar — Basic meals, drinks, coffee and ice cream
  • Changing rooms — Simple facilities available near the entrance
  • Toilets — Available near the parking area
  • Kayak/canoe rental — Sometimes available on the Trebižat river upstream
  • Souvenir shop — Local honey, rakija and handicrafts
