Blagaj Tekke & Buna River: Complete Visitor Guide
Tucked into a sheer cliff face where the emerald Buna River emerges from the earth, Blagaj Tekke is one of the most mystical and photographed places in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This 16th-century Dervish monastery looks as if it grew out of the rock itself, and the crystal-clear spring beneath it is one of the largest karst sources in Europe. From Ferienhaus Biograci, you can reach this magical spot in just 35 minutes by car.

Getting to Blagaj from Biograci
The drive from our holiday home in Biograci to Blagaj takes approximately 35 minutes. The most common route goes via Mostar — follow the M6 through Široki Brijeg towards Mostar, then take the Blagaj exit south of the city. Alternatively, you can take a slightly more direct route via Čitluk and approach Blagaj from the west.
Both routes pass through beautiful Herzegovinian countryside with vineyards and stone villages. The final stretch into Blagaj follows the Buna River, giving you a lovely preview of what awaits.
History of the Tekke
The Blagaj Tekke (tekija) was built around 1520 during the Ottoman period as a monastery for the Sufi order of Dervishes. Sufism is the mystical branch of Islam, and the Dervishes were known for their spiritual practices including the famous whirling meditation (sema). The tekke served as a place of prayer, contemplation, and communal living for the order.
Built directly into the cliff face at the point where the Buna River springs from underground, the location was chosen deliberately — the Sufis believed that the meeting point of water and stone held special spiritual energy. The monastery has been rebuilt and restored several times over the centuries and was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004.
Inside, you can still see the original semahana (prayer hall), the musafirhana (guest rooms), and a small museum with artefacts from the tekke’s long history. The rooms are modestly furnished, reflecting the Dervish emphasis on simplicity and spiritual focus.
The Buna River Source
The Buna spring is one of the largest karst springs in Europe, with water flowing from a cave at the base of a 200-metre cliff. The water is an extraordinary shade of turquoise-green and maintains a temperature of approximately 10°C year-round. The average discharge is around 43 cubic metres per second, making it one of the most powerful springs on the continent.
Boat rides are available that take you into the cave entrance where the water emerges. This short trip (around 10 minutes) lets you glide into the darkness of the cave mouth and see the spring up close. The cost is approximately 5 KM (about 2.50€) per person.
What to See at Blagaj
1. The Monastery Interior
Step inside the tekke to see the historic prayer hall, Dervish living quarters, and small museum. Modest dress is required — women should cover their shoulders and knees, and headscarves are provided at the entrance. Shoes must be removed before entering.
2. The Cave Entrance & Boat Ride
From the terrace beside the tekke, you can see the dark mouth of the cave from which the Buna River flows. Take a short boat ride to glide right into the cave entrance for an unforgettable experience. The cool air and the echo of dripping water create a magical atmosphere.
3. The Cliff Face
The towering cliff above the tekke rises over 200 metres. The way the building nestles into the rock is remarkable from every angle. Walk along the river path for different perspectives and photo opportunities.
4. The River Walk
A pleasant path follows the Buna River downstream from the tekke. Along the way you will pass old watermills, small bridges, and shaded spots perfect for a rest. The walk is flat and easy.
5. Stjepan-Grad (Blagaj Fortress)
High above Blagaj sit the ruins of the medieval fortress Stjepan-Grad, once the seat of the Bosnian King Stjepan Tomašević. The hike up takes about 30–40 minutes and rewards you with panoramic views over the Buna valley, the tekke below, and the surrounding mountains. Bring sturdy shoes and water.
Where to Eat
Blagaj is famous for its riverside restaurants serving freshly caught trout from the Buna. Dining right beside the crystal-clear river is a highlight of any visit.
Vrelo Bune Restaurant
Location: Right at the Buna source, next to the tekke
Cuisine: Traditional Bosnian & fresh river trout
Must-try: Grilled trout (pastrmka), served with blitva (Swiss chard) and potatoes. The terrace hangs over the river with views of the tekke. Expect to pay around 15–25 KM (8–13€) for a full meal.
Riverside Restaurants
Several other restaurants line the Buna River on the approach to the tekke. Most offer similar menus featuring trout, grilled meats, and traditional Bosnian dishes. Tables are set on wooden platforms directly over the water — a wonderfully unique dining experience.
